Electronic Potting

Processes

Potting is critical to long-lasting and reliable performance of advanced electronic components in most of the modern equipment. From the simple LED lights to critical the PF Capacitors used in MRI Scanners, or ECUs used in vehicles potting is vital to functioning of the electronic components and consequentially also the equipment used in which they are used.

The Meter Mix Dispensing Machines are critical to ensuring potting of resins used in the electronic and electrical components. The materials used in potting may include silicones, polyurathanes or epoxy resins in the liquid form. When mixing, these materials may also need pre/post processing (pre-heating, curing etc.) to enhance the protective properties in a particular application. Twin’s Machines have been proven in automating over 100 such potting applications, enabled by accurate mixing, and dispensing of resins, to meet the process and business goals of the Customers.

Expertise to automate and optimise your dispensing tasks

Choosing the right process for potting requires many considerations. Typically, for safety-critical and highly functional components, manufacturers prefer to use under vacuum potting. Components in wind mills, high-end medical equipment or Aircrafts are expected to function with the highest reliability or sometimes difficult to change. Twin’s team has the expertise to optimise the dispensing method for your application considering its materials, component design, production volumes, and critical process parameters for performance.

Homogeneous mixing without any irregularities or bubbles is critical in potting to avoid premature failure of the components. From assessing the suitability of the material for vacuum potting to arriving at the best configuration of the potting process, Twin’s team works closely with material suppliers, your customers and the in-house production team to define the right solution.

Twin Engineers has proven technology and a range of Machines that cater to atmospheric and vacuum potting processes on an end-to-end basis. By understanding your business needs, that is, the expectations for product pricing, performance, and production scale, Twin can suggest and integrate suitable automation options when automating your potting process.

Atmospheric Potting

In atmospheric Potting, often referred to as open air potting, the mixed material is dispensed under atmospheric pressure or open air environment. Whether you need a pilot or R&D level production or large-scale manufacturing, Twin Engineers has the Machines to cater to your current and future requirements on an end-to-end basis. Twin’s Machines are highly modular and easily support to scale-up and scale-down the production, as per your needs.

Twin’s Machines for open air potting, given their accuracy and efficiency, have a proven track record in reliably accomplishing potting of several complex components under atmospheric pressure.

Vacuum Potting

With increasing miniaturisation of electronic components and greater complexities of circuit geometries to be potted, the trend for Vacuum Potting is on the rise. Twin’s Machines offer economical and efficient options, for potting under vacuum. The machines provide a bubble-free material preparation, a highly stable vacuum and precision positioning while dispensing on the component to ensure penetration of potting compound till the core of the component without voids even in narrow gaps.

With economical pick and place automation and integrated vacuum chambers, Twin’s Machines for vacuum potting offer

Pre-Heating

Pre-heating of parts to be potted is required to remove all traces of humidity or air entrapped inside the component. In some cases, the parts to be potted are heated in order to match their temperature to the resin materials. In both the cases, heating helps to optimise the material flow and also improves the cross-linking. Twin’s offers pre-heating ovens, with built-in conveyors to carry the components or trays. The Conveyor systems are integrated with the mixing and dispensing Machine to aid seamless potting.

Curing

Elevated temperatures (heat curing) post the potting aids to increase protection properties including temperature resistance, the strength of the adhesive, brittleness, bonding and more. Twin’s Curing Ovens are designed to accurately control every process parameter, starting from programming to provide the right amount of heat for the appropriate time to ensure the heat gets into the adhesive layer for faster cycle time.
